10 INSIDER QUESTIONS: A Q&A WITH SHELLEY WHIZIN
1. What led you into the world of life coaching?
In many ways, I was born into it. People have been telling me their life stories since I was a child—including my parents, which still amazes me. I’ve always had a natural ability to listen deeply and offer perspective. Watching someone reconnect with joy and authenticity is incredibly fulfilling for me.
2. What attributes make you a good fit for this work?
I’m deeply intuitive; I often hear what someone’s heart is saying even when their words tell a different story. I meet the ego with compassion so people can see their part in their own lives without feeling judged.
3. Who or what inspires you?
A sense of wonder—the idea that the unknown is a playground for discovery. Mel Robbins inspires me for her direct honesty, and the Dalai Lama for his joy in the face of adversity. And honestly, the partnership shared by Nancy & Lisa of Big Blend Radio inspires me; it’s beautiful to witness that kind of mother-daughter bond.
4. Describe your ideal client.
Someone open to learning and being honest with themselves. They are courageous enough to be vulnerable, even when it brings up discomfort, because they want to deepen the meaning of their lives.
5. How did you become the “Live & Die Happy Coach”?
In 1986, a shaman in Peru asked me, “Are you ready to die?” He meant: Are you living so fully that you would be at peace if this were your last breath? Later, being present for a dear friend’s final breath transformed me. Witnessing death taught me how to live.
6. What personal changes did you make to build this career?
I’ve had to continuously look inward and walk my talk. There’s nothing more meaningful to me than seeing someone “hover” between a 7 and a 10 on the Yummy Delicious Life Scale.
7. What is your biggest challenge?
Visibility. I’ve relied mostly on word of mouth, which is wonderful but limiting. Also, my creative mind is a wild horse—learning to focus those ideas into tangible offerings is an ongoing practice.
8. Any three people for a dinner party—who are they?
Albert Einstein for his mind, Shirley Temple’s mother to understand how she supported such a gift, and comedian Leanne Morgan—because humor is essential.
9. If you could switch careers for a day, what would you choose?
A motivational speaker. I love sharing stories with humor and heart simply to move people and witness that “spark” of transformation.
10. Your top tip for a new transformational coach?
Start with listening. Pay attention to what’s not being said. Know your “Why,” because it must be stronger than the challenges of the business.
